Monster Brushes

Brusheezy is a site for sharing Photoshop brushes and other resources. Since I've used other people's brushes in the past, I decided to make a set to share with the community. I have made many, many brushes in the past for my own use, but it was difficult to come up with images that I would be happy to donate to the public domain. I wanted a set that would be useful, unique and interesting.

Luckily, my collection of Japanese TV monsters saved the day (again). I just knew they would turn out to be a good investment.

Here is the preview:

You can download this first set of 10 brushes from Brusheezy here.

If you would like to learn how to make your own brushes in Photoshop, there are hundreds of lessons out there.

If you don't know the kind of Japanese TV monsters I'm talking about, here are some of the best:

Thirty Days Work on Show

Our work is going to be on display, beautifully framed and mounted, for two weeks here in Vancouver. Very exciting! Little Mountain Gallery is where we had our first Thirty Days Show in July 2006.

Day 30: Main and Kingsway Re-Visited

This is what I mean when I say I live here. I cut this out from the rest, made this neighbourhood what it is.

Cut paper.

The printer ink often scraped off the paper when making the cuts. Then the glue played havoc with the finish on the paper.

If anyone else would like to give it a try, here is the PDF with two pages of shapes to cut out. You will need a printer, a very sharp, small-bladed cutting tool, glue and patience. The only condition is that you MUST post pics of your efforts, please!

Day 29: Main and 21st Revisited

Etched acrylic.
10.5 x 50.5cm

The day bends slowly past. Nothing changes yet it has changed. It won’t again tomorrow at a slightly different angle.

Day 28: Main and 15th, Re-Visited

Pencil, watercolour.

This stack of soft stone held the center of our city. Now it reminds us where we are. Down to the water from here.

Day 27: Main and 21st NW

Pen, watercolour.

At the corner, there is when it happens. We like to think. We are at Liberty. Too cute?

Day 26: Main and 26th SE

Pen, watercolour.

Light, sound, motion that washes this place, then the next. I breathe out, someone breathes in.

Day 25: Main and 27th NW

Pen, watercolour.

There is a moment when both lights are red and you can see the mountains. I’ve called you all here to tell you this. Now we shall never meet again.

Day 24: Main and 28th NW

Pen, watercolour.

Awnings over awnings, a corrugated wall of glass drums. That taxi swept through, going so fast.

Day 23: Main and 29th

Pen, watercolour.

I do not know this building. This not-knowing feels familiar; one of the many neighbourhoods that are not mine.

Day 22: Main and 28th

Ink, watercolour.

Look there, then look away. It becomes a memory. Look again. Away. The first memory, the second. Both are lies.

Day 21: Main and 27th

Pen, watercolour.

These metal pedestrians are so familiar that they disappear like people. Lined up for a bus that never comes. I can still read Luxmii when I close my eyes.

Day 20: Main and 26th

Pen, watercolour.

Gasoline ripples rise on watery air. We only see the colours that are left behind.

Day 19: Main and 25th

Pen, watercolour.

It depends on your direction; what you see, what colour finds you, how long you wait. Sometimes it all comes at once.

Day 18: Main and 24th

Coloured pencil, ink.

Blue slices of another sky, a different distance. Tonight the walls pulse with the day’s forgotten heat.

Day 17: Main and 23rd

Pen, ink.

Day 16: Main and 22nd

Pen, ink.

The green bus is gone. Two people got off wearing the same clothes. Every thing is one colour then another then another then none.

Day 11: Main and 17th

Pen, ink.
The original was dominated centrally by the big green tree, but I used too small a brush and made such a dog's breakfast of it that I hacked the whole image down to this horizontal strip in order to focus on the details.

Day 10: Main and 16th

Marker, ink.

Three new cars went by in silence, round and white like clouds with purple bottoms.
Everything was new once. Value is lost and found while we aren’t looking.

Day 09: Main and 15th

Old City Hall
Ink

Day 08: Main and 14th

Marker, ink.

Just a moment. Step in here. Who is it? We need spinach. I told him. She knows. What was that? Where to? Excuse me. Park here. Let’s get a coffee.
All these movements, moments, flowing, frozen.

Day 07: Main and 13th

Marker, ink.

Day 06: Main and 12th

Pen, ink.

We used to buy cut flowers here. Now it is a gallery. Now it is a record shop. The building stands, a man moves a ladder, and the details change again. The lights change, the cars change. We remember, we forget.

Greek Plant (2004)

Drawn on the last page of the beautiful leather sketchbooks given to us at the Aegean Center. I wish I knew the name of this plant (and had brought back some seeds). They were all over the island of Paros and had wonderful textures. There are similar plants here in BC but they don't grow as tall nor as thick.

Jonah and Nicole (2004)

Quick sketch on our last night in Rome. The next morning we flew to Athens and then to Paros to begin the studio portion of our semester at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts.

Four More Statues (2004)

Winged lion of St. Mark in the Basilica dei Frari, Venice.

St. Jerome's hand in the Basilica dei Frari, Venice.

Human pelvis in La Specola, Firenze.

Piccolo Cavaliere's Horse in Pistoia.

Drawn during the Italian semester at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts.
